With alternative breaks, you can travel and make a difference in the community.

Break Away sponsored service trips provide students the opportunity to travel during their winter or spring break to provide service in a community other than their own. Similar to Mini Breaks, these trips of 10-15 students and a faculty adviser are, as Service Leader Shay Mays puts it, “a wonderful way to break the ice and place yourself in a situation where you can physically see the needs others have.”

Recent trips have addressed disaster relief in Louisiana, hunger and homelessness in New York, Habitat for Humanity in Washington and Education and Poverty in Nicaragua.

Adam Shutliff, Service Leader over the Nicaragua trip, says these trips are valuable because, “you can make a difference in somebody’s life and they can make a difference in yours too.”

Alternative break participants describe their experience as humbling, life changing and transforming. These breaks are open to all students at an affordable rate with opportunities to be awarded scholarships for their travel expenses.

More information about alternative breaks is available at the Community Engagement Center and with Break Away.
